Semana 1: Introduccion a China
China is a country located in East Asia. It is the third largest country in the world. It is home to some of the world's largest cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, and Tianjin. It has great geographical diversity: mountainous regions, deserts, plateaus, and fertile plains. Due to its complex geographical location, it is a meeting point for tectonic zones, which causes earthquakes and tsunamis. Due to its extensive coastline, it is exposed to tropical cyclones, as well as floods, droughts, and storms. It also suffers from water shortages and land subsidence due to mining. China suffered the world's worst flood in 1931 and has experienced six of the ten deadliest floods and landslides in the world. It has also suffered three of the world's deadliest earthquakes, including the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, which claimed more than 70,000 lives.
It is important to discuss the difference between hazards, disasters, and catastrophes.
Hazard is a process that creates a very serious threat to human beings and property. Such as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and volcanoes.
A catastrophe is a dangerous, large-scale, and destructive event that exceeds a community's response capacity.
A disaster is the consequence of a catastrophe that causes severe damage and a major economic crisis.
